Mercedes Balarezo
Mercedes Balarezo is an Ecuadorian dance artist and pedagogue based in Helsinki. For her, dance and education are tools that can bring us closer to a fair and equalitarian society. A broad background in teaching dance has taught Mercedes that art pedagogy must aim towards a world where all bodies and voices are seen and heard and where creative expression is democratized.
The topics she explores in her creative work are eclectic. A common thread is her interest in bringing people together, Ecuadorian and Latin identity and personal history. Also, Mercedes is fascinated by the relationship between voice and movement. In her practice “The Voice as a Limb” she looks into what does it mean to put the voice at the centre of the dance improvisation practice. Currently, she is part of Impropias Collective and a board member of Circus Maximus Association.
Mercedes Balarezo
Mercedes Balarezo on Helsingissä asuva ecuadorilainen tanssija ja pedagogi. Hänelle tanssi ja koulutus ovat työkaluja, joiden avulla olemme lähempänä oikeudenmukaisempaa ja tasa-arvoisempaa yhteiskuntaa. Balarezon laaja tausta tanssin opetuksessa on opettanut hänelle, että taidepedagogiikan on tähdättävä kohti sellaista maailmaa, jossa kaikki kehot ja äänet näkyvät ja kuuluvat, ja jossa luova ilmaisu on demokraattista.
Balarezon tutkii luovassa työssään monivivahteisesti eri teemoja. Punaisena lankana kulkee hänen kiinnostuksensa ihmisten yhteen tuomisesta, ecuadorilainen ja latinalainen identiteetti sekä hänen oma henkilöhistoriansa. Balarezoa kiehtoo myös äänen ja liikkeen suhde. Teoksessaa The Voice as a Limb hän syventyi selvittämään, mitä merkitsee äänen asettaminen keskiöön tanssi-improvisaatiossa. Balarezo kuuluu Impropian -kollektiiviin ja on Circus Maximus -yhdistyksen hallituksen jäsen.
